“First Word” Youth Poetry Slam, Lenox Square Mall, 2/9/13
The “First Word” Youth Poetry Slam competition, presented by Project A.R.M. (Atlanta Renaissance Movement) was held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Lenox Square Mall, Atlanta, GA. The competition consists of bi-weekly events that lead up to the finals, held in April during National Poetry Month. Teen poets between 13-18 years of age perform for general crowd-goers, fellow poets, parents and on-lookers. Poets are asked to perform original works, with no props, costumes or instruments. Judges are selected from the audience and score poets on a scale of 0-30 points. Saturday kicked off the 2013 pre-limary rounds. Host Micah Brown, a youth poet himself, performed a few of his works along with veteran poets Focus and Spinxx, to name a few. The first round winner, Eriyelle, who recently moved to Atlanta with her family, entertained the audience in her very first competition. She now advances to the next round.
